The first intcrprovinciul junior match between Canterbury and Otago was played yesterday on the Caledonian Ground, Canterbury winning by 12 points (four tries) to 13 (one try). The visitors had the best of the game throughout. They were better trained, and showed better combination, especially amongst the backs. TRIAL MATCHES. On Saturday afternoon, the Poverty Bay Rugby Union held senior and junior trial matches in view of the forthcoming representative matches against Hawke's Bay, and, despite the unfavorable weather conditions, the play was of a high standard, and leads to the conclusion that the local Union will bo able to put strong fifteens in the field this season. Gibson, the selectors for the the local Rugby Union, mot after the trial match on Saturday afternoon, and chose the following players to take part in the final trial match next Saturday : A Team : I-'ull, Waitai ; threequarters, Sheet, Porter, To Rcina ; halves, E. Johnson, J. Hay (serum), Poananga; forwards, Newton, Wepilia, Swann, Martin, Moana, Williams, Davitt, Reynolds. B Team : Full, Kelly ; threequarters, Ball, Watcne, Nolan ; five-eighth, W. Hay ; half, Brown ; wing-forwards, H. Miller, Colebournc ; forwards, Sherrill, R. C. Murphy, Bright, Hatea, Sherratt, Dwyer, and R. Iv. Murphy. On Saturday afternoon, a trial match was played on Victoria Domain, in order to select a team to play the Hawke’s Bay juniors at Napier next Saturday. Two good teams took the field, and some very creditable form was shown. Mr T. Haisman made a capital referee, and gave the players some useful and much-needed coaching in packing the scrums. The most prominent players among the backs were W. Sharp, Driller, Witty, Third, B. Bright, and Smith, while Bastablc, T. Sharp, Osborne, and D. Scott played capitally among the forwards. On Saturday evening, Messrs A. Sharp, J. Webb, and W. Gibson, the selectors, met, and chose the following junior representative fifteen to represent Poverty Bay at Napier next Saturday : Full back, 0. licpburn ; threequarters, W. Sharp, E. Newton, J. Smith ; halves, G. Witty, W. Driller, 13. Bright; forwards, J. Third, M. Osborne, T. Sharp, 0. Hansen, F. Bastable, W. McCullough, D. Bell, and D. Scott.

Emergencies i M. Rico, A. Ingram, B. Long, and V. Somervell. A meeting of the above team will bo held at the Masonic Hotel this evening at 7.30 o’clock, when all arrangements for the visit to Napier will bo completed. The ITawke’s Bay Union are desirous that tbo match should be played at Napier on Saturday, and an effort will be made by the local Union to send the team down in ono of the coastal boats. Tho fiftoeen are a trifle on tho light side, but includes about half a score of really clover players, and if they seriously buckle to, and got the pack working seriously, they may bo able to keep their much heavier opponents in Napier interested for an hour and a half.
