Friday’s Auckland Herald states : General business is a little quieter as compared with last week. By far the most noticeable and interesting feature at present- is the marvellous effect that the drought in Australia continues to cause in so many lines here. The advances in produce, etc., registered tins week are quite phenomenal, nearly everything being higher except eggs, which are naturally getting more plentiful as the season advances. The only trouble in connection with the Australian market is lest the higher prices now being demanded should result in supplies being obtained from more distant sources, as we saw some time ago in the flour business. In maize thero does not appear any immediate danger of this, although we do not know what North America can do when the present position in Australia becomes known there. It is reported that maize is worth 6s, duty paid, in Sydney, and this sharp advance caused practically all that came up from the Bay to go on by the Zealandia, coyr sacks appearing in the cargo. Consignments were bought at 4s to 4s id on the wharf in wholesale lines, and for a short time a rise is more likely than a decline. As we cannot expect the present values to hold in Sydney indefinitely, every efiort will be made during the next few weeks to get up every sack that can be shipped. Potatoes are in very short supply, and the price has advanced, but not quite to a parity with Southern prices. Christchurch reports orders for South Africa, and also Australia, so that many holders will not quote until they see what will happen. Various prices are mentioned as current, ranging from Ly 17s 6d to L 4 ys f.0.b., and the local market is firm at L 4 10s to L 4 15s ex store, A few local are still being offered,
