KAITI-CITY v. HUIA.
[Notes by “ The Whistle.”] There was perfect weather on Saturday afternoon, and a fair crowd of spectators attended at Victoria Domain to witness the continuation of the Danner fixtures. A fairly strong nor’-wester had dried up all traces of the recent heavy rains, and the ground was in capital order. The energetic Hon. Sec. of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union (Mr W. S. McCredie) was in attendance on the ground early in the afternoon, and under his directions the boundary lines on the two fields of play merited off afresh by the groundman, the symmetrical white lines showing up on the green turf with effect. At 8.30, the following teams took the field : Kaiti-City : Coleman, Baker, W. Hay,
Porter, Witty, Glennie, J. Hay, Colebourne, Martin, Dwyer, K. Harris, Hansen, Kay, Bright, and It. K. Murphy. Iluia : W. Sharp, Leah, Burns, Kelly, Te Rcina, Symes, Osborne, Swann, McGruther, Moana, liatea, Bastable, T. Sharp, and D. Scott. Colebourne won the toss for Kaiti-Citv, and defended the Hapara goal, which gave his men the advantage of the strong wind and also of playing with the sun behind
them. Playing the three-half game, the combined team made the game open, and with the aid of tho wind had all the best of the first spell. Donald Porter was in great form, and early in tho game scored a try with a strong, dashing run through the Huia men. He followed this up by
dropping a couple of beautiful goals from the field. Glennio also scored a try in tho first spell. Dwyer, who made a first appearance on a local ground, improved both trios with good kicks. This player is a powerfully-built forward, and though apparently carrying a penalty of soveral pounds of superlluous weight, ho proved that he could take tho ball well on tho lino, run, pass, and kick in first-rate stylo. Ho hails from Napier, where ho played with the City Club, and is also roported to have represented Taranaki for a couple of seasons. In the first spell, Kaiti-City ran up IS points, of which Porter scored 11. Ball re-inforced tho Huia side in the second spell. Tho countrymen played in a lackadaisical, happy-go-lucky stylo throughout the gamo. No doubt, tho fact that they wore hopelessly out of the fight for the banner, and that a win in this match would liavo availed thorn nothing, had tho effect of making them indifferent. Bastable, Moana, and Swann scored for Huia in tho second spell, and the game ended in favor of Kaiti-City by 18 points (two goals from tries and two potted goals) to 9 points (threo tries). Two spells of forty minutes each were played. Mr W. S. McCredie was referee, and Messrs Waitai and J. A. Eaton acted as lino-umpires.
JUNIOR MATCH. The juniors held a practieo match on No. 2 ground, in view of tiro representative junior match with Hawke's Bay. Messrs A. Sharp, J. IVobb, and W. Gibson, the selectors, drafted out sides on tho ground, and somo good work was put in in a couple of short spells, controlled by Mr J. Webb. Tho men were generally a youthful and feather-weight lot, but there wore some good ones among them, and next Saturday should see an interesting exhibition, when the junior trial match takes place. The Napier men have already met Canterbury and Wanganui this season. Next Saturday they play tho representatives from far away Southland, at Napier, and on September 3rd they havo to engage the redoubtable Otago men, who are making a raid on tho North at present.
Local players will be pleased to hear that a couple of Gisborne men materially assisted Te Aute to give Wanganui tho handsome beating of 21 points to 8 in tho recent inter-Collcge match at Wanganui. Erekana played a slashing gamo at centrethreequarter for the winners. He scored a brilliant try, after beating several men (says “Eye-Witness ” in the Napier Telegraph), and also place-kicked a couple of goals. Hira, another Gisbornite, played a fino gamo amang the forwards. Murphy was prominent on the Wanganui Collego side.
