Sergeant.-Major Finn was a passenger from the South this morning. Yesterday afternoon Councillor Mason collected over DlO in Lowe street towards the town clock.

ceived the following telegram in regard to the Native Trust Estates : 11 Kia-ora. In the words of W , 1 There is a happy issue to all our troubles.’ I trust so, for I think with care and good management all sides will be benefited, and tho interest of the district promoted. Thank you for your good wishes.” Yesterday Mr T. J. Thomas, of Pouparao, brought to tho Times office several fine cauliflowers, a sample of the class of vegetable that ho is offering for sale. He has over three and a-half acres of cauliffowers, and yesterday he was engaged for over six hours cutting them for the local market. This vegetable is always in request, and householders should to-day make a point of keeping a sharp look-out for the man with the whistle. A meeting of the Whataupoko Road Board was called yesterday to consider the question of special rates and the striking of tho ordinary and special rates for the year. The members present were Messrs Matthews (chairman), Lysnar, and Hamon, but as a reply had not been received from the Government Auditor, Mr Lamb, in regard to the special loan account, it was deemed advisable to adjourn the meeting until Friday next. The Union Steamship Company warn the travelling public against purchasing steamer tickets at cheap rates through the medium of advertisements in the newspapers, They are informed that some pereon is disposing of forged tickets in this manner, and that these tickets have been presented at several of their branch offices, but as there is no difficulty in the officials detecting the forgery in each case the purchaser has lost the amount so paid. The game of table bowls should claim the interest and support of all lovers of sport in Gisborne, for two reasons ; first, on account of the fascination of the game itself, and secondly because it has been invented by a local bowling enthusiast. The enterprise displayed by Mr A J. Massey in this matter is deserving of all commendation, and we hope to see a largo attendance of the public at the Academy of Music on Tuosdoy evening next, when the tournament will be commenced.

Tho attention of town and country residents is drawn to tho advertisement of Mr G. H. Evans, hairdresser and tobacconist, who, on account of the rebuilding of the block in which he has for many years carried on business, has removed to new premises at the corner of Grey street and Gladstone road, which will in future bo known as “ Evans’ Corner.” Haircutting and shaving is done in tho latest style, and every effort is made by Mr Evans to ensure satisfaction to his customers.

Messrs Dalgety and Co. will hold their monthly stock sale at the Makaraka yards on Thursday next, when a number of good lines will be offered. Over a hundred head of cattle are already entered for the sale, as well as several good lots of two and four-tooth wethers. On account of Messrs Shanks Bros, there will also be offered eight draught horses and harness, a dray, set disc harrows, Cambridge roller, and other farm implements, most of which have had only one season’s work. Mr G. E. Eliott will conduct the sale.

A Melbourne telegram of the 10th inst. states : As a result of a fire which last night destroyed the premises in North Melbourne occupied by Mr Pratt, a wood and coal dealer, two of five children left sleeping in the houso were burnt before their rescue could be effected. One of the children, Robert Pratt, aged ? l /i, died to-night in the Children’s Hospital. The other child is improving. The fire is supposed to have been caused by a log rolling out of the kitchen fireplace, and occurred during the temporary absence of the father. The Committee having in hand the arrangements for the table bowling tournament met yesterday, and after skips had been appointed and partners drawn, the following handicap was decided upon : Eure and Massey (skip) 5 behind scratch, Nicholas and Coleman 2 behind scratch, Ilane and J. W. Witty 2 behind scratch, Quigley and Ifwerson 2 behind scratch, Harris and Dixon 1 behind scratch, Seymour and Gaudin 1 behind scratch, J. T. Witty and Simson 1 behind scratch, A. F. Kennedy and Sidebottom 1 behind scratch, Morgan Bnd Ponsford 1 behind scratch, W. O, Skeet and Ferris, Wallace and Martin, Harding and Hennessy scratch. At a quarter past seven on Tuesday night, His Worship the Mayor and the President of the Bowling Club, Mr J.

A. Harding, will play a game of three heads, and declare the tables open for play. The following matches will then take place : —Harding and Hennessy v. A. F. Kennedy and Sidebottom, Nicholas and Coleman v. J. T. Witty and Simson. At the conclusion of these games Messrs Morgan and Ponsford play Eure and Massey, and Messrs Kane and Witty play Seymour and Gaudin. The remaining four pairs were drawn byes. The following rules have been framed by the Committee : Each player must have one foot on the platform (which takes the place of the mat on the bowling green) when delivering his bowl. Any driving ball must be delivered from the centre of 'the table. All disputes are to be referred to the Tournament Committee, Messrs Massey, Witty, and Hennessy, and their decision shall be final.
