It has beon stated that only young men are likely to succeed as settlers at the New Hebrides, and they must have capital. A two-yoar-old child, named Chapman, wandered from home at Narrabri, New South Wales, and was found dead in the bush. A report, furnished by a number of miners, shows that the price of mining explosives in Victoria is much higher than in Johannesburg. Two men were entombed by a fall of earth in Adelaide, but both were quickly rescued, one with three ribs and his collarbone broken. whole of the medical corps in each Stato arc to bo embraced in the Australian Army Medical Corps, under a Director-General. It is reported that one farmer in the Ashburton Porks district, Canterbury, had between 25 and 3C jheep worried by dogs the other day. At Sydney, Frank Orleans, a seaman, fell in a cell at the water police station, and fractured his skull.
New South Wales has during the present year increased her leather trade with South Africa by 442,2261 b. It is proposed to invite Mr John Burns to visit Australia to deliver a series of lectures on labor organisation. A mob of starving cattle, which recently arrived at the Bellinger Heads, New South Wales, died from weakness. It is expected that 70,000 tons of sugarcane will be crushed in the Maclean district, New South Wales, this season. At Loekyer (Queensland) show recently, several of those present refused to drink the toast of the Federal Parliament. Last month 268 permits were issued in Melbourne for South Africa, and applications at the rate of 70 per day are coming in, chiefly from Victorians. The destruction of crayfish on the Tasmanian coast by Victorian fishermen has again excited adverse comment, and steps are being taken to prevent it. Three Melbourne firms were fined £5 each at the City Court recently for making false entries in respect of goods passed through the Customs and liable to duty. Cane-cutters at Maclean, New South Wales, are agitating for an increase of 3d per ton to bring back the rate to 2s 9d paid before the late Reid Government held office.
