MILITARY BALL.
One of the most successful social functions held in Gisborne for some years took place in the Theatre Royal last evening, when a military ball was held in aid of the Veterans’ Home. From the time the gathering was first mooted the East Coast Mounted Rifles and Gisborne Rifles entered heartily into the matter, with the result that their eft irts were crowned with success, the ball being in every way most enjoyable. l'he interior I the hall was tastefully decorated with fl 's and ’muting, and presented a most plea-mg appearance. Round the wall were numbers of patriotic emblems, photographs of His Majesty the King, and other members of the Royal family, and many hanusome mirrors, all of which added to the general effect. Groups of rifles and bayontts were also artistically arranged in several places, whilst a banner with the words “ Long Live the King,” was placed on the fiont of the gallery. As was naturally to be expected there was a large and representative attendance, there being upwards of one hundred and forty couples present, and the galierv and stage, the latter being beautifully arranged as a drawing room, were crowded with interested spectators, who watched the dancing until a late hour. Excellent arrangements were made for supper, which was served in a large apartment at the side of the hall, specially constructed for the occasion. The catering was done by Mr J. Craig, and the viands were of an exceedingly choice order. The music was provided by Mrs Fernandez fpiano), Massey (violin), and Trounson (cornet), and was very highly appreciated. The floor was in capital order, thanks to the efforts of a noble band of workers, I consisting principally of members of the two rifle corps, who spent several hours in the preparation of it, the work reflecting great credit upon them. The programme consisted of 24 dances, with four extras, and dancing was continued until an early hour this morning. The members of the general committee were East Coast Mounted Rifles: Capt. Colebourne, Lieut?. Hutchison, Beere, Tombleson, Sergt.Major Evans, Corp. Zachariah, Trooper Oates. Gisborne Rifles: Capt. Warren. Lieuts. Lewis and Bull, Sergts. Wakelin and Franklin, and Private Georgeson. The secretarial duties were ably carried out by Quarter-Master Sergt. Eliott and i Sergt. Cruikshank, who are to be con- I gratulated upon the great success of the j ball, which was in a large measure due to I their individual efforts. The M.C.’s were I Lieut. Lewis, Sergt.-Major Evans, Quarter- ' Master-Sergt. Eliott, and Sergt. Cruikshank.
