Tho Australians in thoir first innings made 312. Tho weather is cloudy and tho wicket soft. Tho attendance is good. Hill and Trumpcr resumed tho inniugs, which was interrupted by rain on the previous day. They opened cautiously, but free hitting was soon the order of tho day. Beforo u separation was effected, they carried tho scoro into the eighties. Hill was first to go, being caught by Sowell at long-on. He showed excellent form for his 34. Two for 84. Tho ground was playing somewhat slow. Darling joined Trumper, who had 44 to his credit. Aggressive tactics wero continued, tho.spectators being treated to a display of lino hitting by both batsmen. Tho century appeared at tho end of fortyfive minutes’ play. Not till fifty runs later did separation come. Darling succumbed to a catch by Champion, off Jessop. Three for 150. Noble contributed ton, and then mot a fate similar to Darling’s. Four for 185. Trumper meanlimo brought his score to 96. Gregory retired without scoring, being caught by Board. Fivo for 186. The ground had now become faster. Armstrong assisted Trumper to carry his score to 125. A catch by Champion put an end to the Sydney century compiler’s career. He played a dashing but lucky innings, in which ho gave three* chances. Ho was two hours at the wickot3, and hit sixteen tourers. Six for 223.
Hopkins partnered Armstrong after the lunch adjournment, and knocked up 19 before he was bowled by Jessop. Jones, in a short and merry life, contributed 14, being caught by Brownleo at third man, Eight for 282. This made Jessop’s sixth consecutive wicket. Cartor made a single, and then played Woof on. Nine for 301. Howell was dismissol with an easy catch b.y AVrathall in tho slip. Armstrong’s not out contribution was 51, compiled with steady, faultless play. In tho first innings, Gloucester had lost nine wickets for 147 when stumps were drawn. Tho wicket was a treachorous one. (Received 6.30 p.m., Aug. 20.) AVrathall was brilliantly thrown out by Gregory, at short-leg. One wicket for 24. Sowell played stylishly for 33, when Armstrong caught him in the slips. Two for 68.
Champion joined Langdon. Tho latter was caught by Ilill, at long-leg, aftor a good innings. Threo for 83. Jessop hit up 13, and was bowled by Armstrong. Four for 103. Rico was bowled by Hopkins. Champion stoadily increased the score. Five for 124. Troup was dismissed by a wob-judged catch by Hill. Six for 129. Board followed, but Champion was immediately bowled by Hopkins. Seven for 131. Board added 8 before Armstrong bowlod him. Eight for 141. Brownlee played Hopkins on for a duck. Armstrong had 29 scored off him at the fall of the seventh wicket, ond 35 at tho fall of the oighth.
