IMPORTANT DISCOVERIES.
Paris, Juno 28, According to despatches tho restoration of the Castle of Saint Angelo at Rome has caused some important discoveries. Quito in tho top of the tower, in a room adjoining tho apartment, of Paul Farnese, have appeared, after cleaning, the frescoes of Pierin del Vaga, with tho history of “ Cupid and Psyche.” Dr Ernest 3teinmann, on studying theso paintings, has succeeded, so ,it is said, in demonstrating with certainty that they wero made according to ongravings that Coxcyen had copied from tho drawings prepared by Raphael to completo his cycle of the adventures of Psycho for the logo of the Farnese that remained incomplete because of tho death of tho master.
Tho frescoes of the Castlo of Saint Angelo are precious bocauso they reproduce precisely tho series of adventures of 11 Psyche on tho Earth,” with which Raphael intended to decorate tho lower part of the walls ; likewise “ The Adventures of Psyche in Heaven,” that wero to serve to ornament tho ceilings of the magnificent Agostino Chigi, Pierin del Vaga painted also the History of Cupid and Psyche in the Doria Palace at Genoa, but there ho has wandered far from tho models of Raphael that he had known so woll how to reproduce in the Castle of Saint Angelo.
