TRAMCAR ACCIDENT

[By Telegraph—Press Association.] Auckland, Saturday,

An occurrence of an exciting nature took place in Wellesley street last evening, which resulted in the wrecking of a tramcar, and the conductor, a young man named John Davis, receiving injuries which necessitated the amputation of the toes of his right foot. The brakes failed to grip the lines sufficiently, and the speed of the car was accelerated greatly to the bottom of the hill. The conductor and driver (threw sacks and gear on the track in the hope of stopping the car. but this was useless. On reaching Queen street the car jumped from the track, and landed against the steel centre pole of the elecric tramway circuit. The pole crashed between the horses, breaking the hind legs of one of them, so that it had to be destroyed. The pole penetrated the car a couple of feet, pinning Davis to the front wall. The driver escaped unhurt, beyond a bruised knee and a slight injury to his toes. There were only a few passengers in the car, and these jumped out and escaped injury, with the exception of one man, who got a severe bruising. The front plates of the car were twisted like paper, and a couple of seats and windows broken.
