FINANCIAL TROUBLE.

The Budget shows a deficit of £239,000, which will be met by the issue of Treasury bills. The treasurer is not charmed with federation, and said now that the glamor was over they were beginning to ask whether the step was not too hastily taken. If a vote were taken now eight out of ten would say, “ No.” The Federal tariff had been framed without consideration for South Australia. He estimated in the current year a surplus of £IIOQ, based on an estimate of a six-bushel harvest, He proposed to raise £89,000 by additional taxation, including reduction of the income tax exemption to £l2O, with no exemption of amounts over £40,000.
