The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, AUGUST 16, 1902. BEAUTIFYING WORK.

The remarks made at the meeting of the Beautifying Association by the President (Mr A. E. Kennedy) are worthy of close attention. For numerous reasons the Association prefers the Point sito for the Coronation memorial, the main reason being given that a fine opportunity would thus be afforded for the completion of that work by the Association. The main interest, however, attaches to Mr Kennedy's statement as regards the two grounds. Ho shows that those who support the Point are not doing so because of antagonism to the Recreation Ground; and further that every effort will at the same time bo made to beautify the Recreation Ground. The main complaint of the West Enders, we take it, is not so much as to a band rotunda, but as to the disproportion of the amount spent at the upper and lower portions of the town. Tnat being so, would it not be wise now that the whole question has been so well threshed out and tho little excitement has had time to cool down, to make an effort at a compromise that will be acceptable to all? An amicable conference at this stage might save a lot of trouble and heartburning in the future. As the position was at the outset tho West Enders felt that they had been challenged; tho challenge was accepted with alacrity', and there was such a demonstration as no reasoning man would attompt to bolittlc. The West Enders showed that they were in earnest, and they also proved that their force was a strong one. Now that the atmosphere has been cleared, however, why should there not bo a friendly meeting to see if both works cannot be gono on with ? There is no doubt that if the West Enders, having shown their power, now give the Pointers a helping hand, tho latter could give groat assistance to the West End. Tho Beautifying Association have shown their bona tides in the matter by their progress in regard to the work at the Recreation Ground, and with a promise of still further energy being thrown into the work much could be accomplished. Wo throw out the suggestion in tho hope that a friendly understanding between both sections may bo" arrived at.
