CORONATION MEMORIAL.

BEAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION’S

WORK.

At tho meeting of tho Committee of the Beautifying Association, tho President (Mr A. F. Konnedy) referred to tho resolution adopted by the Association some timo ago, strongly favoring the Point as tho site for the proposed Coronation Band Rotunda. At present thero did not seem to bo a groat deal of interest being taken in tho forthcoming referendum, but probably it would increase as the day for a decision neared, and he thought that the members of the Association should do what they could towards having the Point adopted as the site. It was not, he said, that they were going beyond their functions in taking interest in such a question. As a Beautifying Association they wished to continue the good work that had been completed as far as Mr Matthews’ offico, so that the work should bo complete from bridgo to bridge. If the Point site were not adopted for the memorial ho did not 300 how they could carry tho work on out of ordinary funds. Tho opportunity offered to do that work was a splendid one, and he thought they should do all they could to havo tho work completed to tho Turanganui bridge. Every person who had tho interests of tho town and the beautifying of it at heart would seo that the site would suit much better than at tho Recreation Ground. Any of them looking boyond their noses and private interests would consider it would ; bo of greater bonefit to the town to havo tho memorial in tho centre of tho town, whore peoplo could see it. If they could continue the Beautifying Association’s 'work to tho bridge and turn tho unsightly place into a beautiful spot it would bo a great public benefit. They ought all to try and havo that site adopted. There might bo a|strong fight, and it was their duty to endeavor to havo the Association’s work continued. It was not, ho pointed out, a fight against tho Recreation ground. Before the Coronation memorial was mentioned at all, thoy had had a plan prepared for tho beautifying of that ground, a rotunda to bo placod there eventually. It was intended as the opportunity offered to continue the work that had already been begun thero, and to make a very beautiful place of it, and there was no desire of any kind to do other than encourago offorts to improvo that ground. However, as regarded tho Coronation memorial, it was an oxcollent opportunity to have tho other work completed, and he hoped and believed that it would be adopted when tho referendum was taken. If ho consulted his own private interests, tho Recroation ground was close to his own proporty, and it would be advantageous to him to havo work dono there ; but, in tho interests of the public, ho considered that there was really no choice between having the Coronation memorial at the Point and at the Recreation ground. Tho Point was in every way tho most suited, and from an unsightly place could, with the aid of this vote, bo turned into a beautiful placo that would bo the admiration of everyone, whether residents or visitors.
