THE CHARGE AGAINST HARRIET

The trial of Harriet Drake, who is charged with tho manslaughter of bor oighfc-yoar*old daughter, was continued .to-dav, and had not concluded when tho Couvi. adjourned. Dr Powwf, of Dtaki, who was called to attend deceased, s.tatod that tho child had boon dead about an -l-our when ho reached the house. He examined the body by candle light, and found it :'cry much discolored. Thero were bruisos everywhere, except on tho face and nock. There wore dark bruises on the chest, and three groups of cuts across the abdomen, making about fifteen marks altogether. The skin was broken in many places, and showed blood arid marks of violence. The injuries looked as though they had been caused by lashes of a whip. He found a depression on the right side of the skull just above the ear. The bruises were numerous and severe. Pieces of unbruised skin as large as a shilling could not be found. The prisoner was present when witness made his first examination o the body. She remarked at the time how dreadful, I gave her too severe a thrashing.” Tho post-mortem showed ator that all deceased’s organs wore healthy, and did not rovoal any cause of death. Witness thought death resulted from shock caused by punishmont, or from concussion of the brain. . , Dr. Clay gavo corroborativo evidence. 1 Hearing of tho case will bo continued to-morrow.
