COOK MEMORIAL.

SOME ENCOURAGING COMMENTS.

Mr J. A. Millar, M.H.R. for Dunedin City, writes to to the socretary of the Cook Memorial Fund :—“ Your favor to hand, and the matter you mention will receivo my support should any reasonable proposal be brought before tho House.” ' Mr Ell, M.H.R. for Christchurch City, writes : —'• I will gladly support a grant by Parliament to such an object, which should commend itself to every man and woman who calls New Zoaland home. I willsond you a small contribution. I would make it a sum more worthy of tho purpose, but I am only a poor man, although a Member of Parliament. Wishing yon every success.” Tho August number of the New Zealand Illustrated Magazino has tho following reference to the Cook Memorial movement :— ll A Captain Cook Memorial; Everyone knows that this illustrious navigator’s first landing place in New Zealand during his journey round f'Vo world was at Poverty Bay, Until just'recently no endeavor whatever has been made to erect a monument to commemorate his landing. It is therefore with the greater pleasure that we hear a committee has been fornied of tho Mayor and some of the most influential men in Gisborne, and a subscription list has been opened to remedy this long-standing neglect, and erect a monument in the locality where Captain Cook first landed. It is a debt the colony ' owes to tke' memory l of the bold mariner, and the sooner they set to work to pay it the better. Although the people of Gisborne have been the first to realise this, tho work will rightly bo made a national one. Subscriptions from one shilling upwards will be received by Rev. 11. Williams and Mr W. A. Barton, S.M., hon. treasurers of the Cook Memorial Fund, Gisborne, towards this laudable object, and wo trust they will receive a very heartj" to their call."
