FOOTBALL.

AUCKLAND BEATS WELLINGTON

FORMED GISBORNITE HAD HIS LEG BROKEN.

By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Saturday. The interprovincial football match, Auckland v. Wellington, was played at Alexandra Park this afternoon, in the presence of about 9000 spectators. The weather held fine, but the ground was heavy, owing to recent rains. In the first spell, Watkins scored for Wellington, and G. Spencer converted ; but, on the whole, Auckland, though playing against the wind, had the best of the play, and got off some nice passing runs among the backs. The defence of the visitors, however, was too strong. After about fifteen minutes of the second spell had gone, the home players got to work, and the sweeping, hard, determined forward rushes proved irresistible. Right on to the call of time, they had Wellington on the defence, and tries were scored by Asher, Laing, Cunningham, and Tyler, three of them being converted. The gamo was thus won by Auckland, the scores being:— Auckland 18 Wellington 5 Eight minuteß from the proper time for

the close of play, Manson, the Wellington wing-forward, collided with Asher, and Manson had his leg broken. Auckland were then right on to the Wellington goalline, and would probably have added to the score, as they were going “ great guns," but the captains of the teams decided to stop play.

| Special to Tijiks. | Auckland, Saturday. C. H. Manson, who had his leg broken to-day in the Auckland-Wellington football match, was a well-known Gisborne representative, being formerly on the Gisborne Cnstoms staff.
