COOK MEMORIAL.

THE LADIES’ COMMITTEE. A meeting of ladies interested in the Cook Memorial movement was held in the rooms over Dalrymple’s on Saturday afternoon. Mrs Sampson was voted to the chair, and briefly explained the wishes of the General Committee, who desired a ladies’ committee to be appointed to assist in the work. After some discussion the following Committee was appointed:—Mesdames Townley, Coleman, Barton, Williams, Sievwright, Sampson, and Miss Sampson, with power to add to their number. Mrs H. Williams was appointed President of the Committee, Mrs Sampson Hon. Secretary, and Mrs Sievwright Hon. Treasurer.

Mrs Sampson submitted a number of proposals with regard to securing the support of the schools of the colony, and a circular which she had prepared was approved by the meeting. Mrs Sampson suggested that the circular should be forwarded to the Headmaster or Committee of each school, together with a copy of His Lordship Bishop Williams’ address on the visit of Captain Cook to Poverty Bay and Tolago Bay. She also suggested a circular being sent to all newspapers in the colony inviting their support The appeal which the Ladies’ Committee is making to the schools of the colony is distinct from the general effort, and will be known as the Children’s Cook Memorial Fund. The funds will be banked separately, but will be available for whatever purposes the General Committee may decide the memorial shall take. It is intended to ask for subscriptions from one penny upwards. A good deal of discussion took place in [ regard to the proposed pienie to Ormond on Cook Day. The ladies were most enthusiastic in regard to the matter, but expressed a wish to meet the General Committee before approaching the ladies of the Ormond district. It was suggested that the ladies of Ormond should be asked to prepare a special programme for the day in question, and look upon it as Ormond’s contribution to the Cook Memorial Fund. The Secretary of the General Com mittee, Mr Gaudin, promised to call i meeting of the two committees during thi present week.
