By Telegraph—Press Association, Wellington, last night. Mr Smith, 8.A., of Grevmouth, has been appointed to teach secondary subjects at the Masterton High School. Dunedin, last night. At the Police Court to-day, Fred. W. Lowry was committed for trial for an alleged assault on a young woman who was on her way home in Nevalley on Saturday. Bail was allowed in XIOO.

OTAGO UNIVERSITY. (Per Press Association), Dunedin, last night. After the meeting re University finances to-day, the Daily Times and Witness Co. forwarded a eheque for XIOO to the Registrar of the Otago University, and the Westport Coal Co. a cheque for XoO, with a promise of more from the latter company when the larger scheme is formulated, for putting the U Diversity finances on a sound basis.

HIS EXCELLENCY THE GOVERNOR [By Telegraph—Press Association.] New Plymouth, last night. The Governor arrived hero by train this evening, and was received by a guard of honor formed by the Taranaki Rifles and Guards, with the Garrison Band, at the Theatro Royal, where ho distributed medals to returned troopers. Subsequently he gave an address, advocating the proposed Home for veterans. Considerable enthusiasm was shown in favor of the project, and a large and influential committee was appointed to further the same. To-morrow His Excellency unveils a bust of Sir Harry Atkinson at the Town Hall, and attends the football match in tho afternoon.

POULTRY SHOW. By telegraph—Press Association— Palmerston North, Inst night. The first show held under tho auspices of the Manawatu Poultry Association opened to-day, with over 700 entries from all parts of the colony. Tho collection of birds was really excellent. The following wero the principal prize-winners Best game bird in show, A. Roburgh, Otaki; Indian game, H. J. Matison, Palmerston North ; Plymouth lloclc, Hoult and Son, Eeilding ; Orpington, H. J. Haines, Wellington ; Wyandotte, G. Hight, Rongotca; Houdan, J. Mayo, Palmerston North; Aylesbury ducks, C. H. Pickering, Palmerston North ; Pekin ducks, E. A. Burr, Wellington, Tho silver cup for most points in certain classos has not yet been decided. Tho local birds compared favorably with those sent from other places. A dinner was held to-night, at which tho judges and visiting oxhibit-ors were entertained by tho Association. DISPUTE BETWEEN LOCAL BODIES. (Per Press Association.) Masterton, last night. Another local body dispute was hoard here to-day. Tho subject in dispute was the maintenance of a certain road, and was between Eketabuna and Masterton County Councils. Evidence was heard by the Commissioner, Mr W. W. Short.
