AUCKLAND SYNOD.
THE LATE BISHOP COWIE
[BY TELEGRAM.—MESS ASSOCIATION.] Auckland last night. A special mooting of the Auckland Diocosun Synod called for the purpose of taking stops to elect a successor to the lato Bishop Cowie opened to-day. At the Communion servico tho Bishop of Wei lingtou (Dr. Wallis) was celebrant, and gavo an earnest address. Ho hoped the deliberations might be so conducted as to mako them a pattern for others to follow, nnd that thoy might bo characterised by solf-control, tondorncss, nnd lovo of duty. At tho business session Archdoacon Cnlder gavo tho opening address. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of tho lato Bishop Cowio was carried. Tho Synod then proceeded to discuss a motion for fixing tho Bishop’s stipend at a minimum Of £BOO. Tho Anglican Synod deferred the question of election of a Bishop till tho mooting
in October, and requested tho Standing 2 Committeo and General Trust Board to devise a mode by which a fixed income may bo assured for tho future Bishop. Tho Synod also appointed a Commission of five clorgymon and fivo la.yraon to mako enquiries in England and elsowhoro as to tho mon available for election, and report to tho Synod in October as to namos and qualifications.
