Farmers’ Union.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Timaru, last night. _ A meeting oi the executive of the South Canterbury Province Farmers’ Union was held held here to-day. It received the report of Mr J. F. Douglas, tho delegate at the recent Colonial Conference, and discussed some of the conclusions of the Conference. The Union platform was criticised as absurdly insufficient, and tho ruling out of such proposals as political was said to be inconsistent, and if that attitude were persevered in it would make tho Union useless.
Mr Maseiin expressed a fear that tho difference of interests in the North Island aud South would render it necessary to -’■'vide the Union.
It was resolved to take steps to form a Tnnaru branch, the one originally formed being broken up by Jhe formation of other branches.
The question of assisting owners of threshing-mills to resist the claims of mill hands in the dispute before the Arbitration Court was discussed. It was decided that the body could not do anythin-’ us a union, but the branch secretaries are to-Lg asked to receive subscriptions from m- ujbers to a fund to assist the mill-owners to defend themselves, as if defeated the extra charge must be passed on to farmers.
