“We have been taught to look to the Government for work.” This wa3 the sentiment of one of the speakers at the meeting of the unemployed on Saturday night. And it cannot be said that he was wrong. Whether the Government was inspired with sympathy for the workers, or was influenced by the selfish desire to buy support, it certainly has taught the people to look to it for employment. While money was plentiful and credit good, this work was easily furnished, until the country had an enormous army of cooperative laborers on its books. Now, however, the scene is changed. Money is no longer plentiful. Our credit was not sufficiently good to float the last loan. Therefore, public works have necessarily been stopped.—Observer.
