The relations of Great Britain to her colonies will be the great problem of the next few’ years. Mo doubt the present Ministry will have to reckon with the defection of a certain section of their followers, if they propose to depatt in any degree from the principles of a freetrade policy, and to that extent the opposition will be the gainers. It is, however, something to be thankful for that the consideration of this question may now be undertaken with a free hand by the man best qualified for the task. We cannot doubt that before long we shall see the new policy take practical shape, and to that end the Imperial Conference now sitting may give material assistance,— Hawke's Bay Herald,
