COOK MEMORIAL.
TOLAGO BAY TO THE FRONT.
Mr A. 1\ Agnew, the well-known storekeeper of Tolago Bay, writes Here is an item of Coast news for you. The young men of our township want to have a dance, and not being well up in the game they came along to your humble servant to fix things for them, at the sam time asking me what I thought of the proposal. After considering the matter, I replied : “ Look here, boys! You can do away with invites; just have the dance in aid of the Captain Cook Memorial Fund. Let a few posters from the Times Office, and you will have a really good turnout.” The young men heartily approved ct" the suggestion, and the function will take place on August loth. They say we are a bit slow up this way, but this will be one for us. How's that, umpire '? P.S.—We want the monument at Cook's Cove, over Cook’s Well. 6 The following letter has been received w “v. Can;'!' Fox ;—“ Waerengafrom the... • niog, Dear Sir,—l a-hika, dol'd -iu.y, _ -mu; kind am much obliged to you for letter inviting me to contribute to the proposed Cook Memorial. The promoters of this movement have my hearty sympathy, for the landing of Captain Cook in New Zealand was an event memorable even in the great history of the world : and it well deserves to be recorded that in this case, as in so many others, disappointment and failure were only the prelude to grand success, and that no beginning, however insignificant, is to be despised since it may develop into undreamt.of and stupendous issues. 1 have pleasure in enclosing my subscription. Faithfully yours, J. E. Fox.”
A VALUABLE SUGGESTION. , Dr. J. V. Williams writes us follows to the Secretary of the Cook Memorial Fund :—“ The movement which has been taken up by the Gisborne Times, for erecting a memorial to Captain Cook, is an excellent one. and worthy of wide spread support. I trust the committee will place their ideal high, and will aim, not only at erecting an obelisk to the memorv'of Cook, but also at acquiring a considerable area on the Kaiti Hill, and laying it out as a public garden. Such a garden, with an obelisk standing therein, would bo a fitting recognition of the services of the great navigator. P.S.—I have much pleasure in enclosing a guinea for the Cook Memorial Fund.”
