Russian Cruelty.

Stockholm, June 7. Advices received from Abo, Finland, say that, as a result of the reign of terror instituted by the Russian authorities and the practico of illegally forcing the young men of Finland into the army a great exodus for America by way of Norway and Sweden has sot in. Tho Russian authorities in their attempt to destroy the Finnish nationality do not hesitate to perpetrate acts of cruelty. Young men are forcibly seized and transported to distant parts of Russia, where they are impressed into the Czar’s service. In Abo alone, during the last few months, over 300 mechanics, apprentices and other young men of the military age have been enrolled in a Russian regiment. Russian peddlers to the number of 5,000 have been sent into Finland to aid in the Russianizing process. business men of Abo who refused to buy goods of these political agents in disguise have been imprisoned and their goods confiscated. But the Russian authorities are keeping these details secret. A btrict censorship has been established, and even private mail thought to contain “ inflammatory matter ” is opened, and the writer as well as the recipient of the letter is severely, punished. It is estimated that during the last few months 5,000 Finns have emigrated, despite tho stem order of the Gov-ernor-General that no one will be permitted to leave without governmental sanction.

Tho Wairarapa Daily News had the following in regard to the Mastorton town clock : We have been asked as to tho words represented by the chimes of the Masterton post office clock. Wo have tho authority of Mr Burton for stating that they are the following linos : - “ All through this hour Lord be our guide ; For by thy power No foot shall slide."

Next week we may expect to hear the chimes! The bells are now hung; the machinery of the clock itself, a beautiful arrangement, which will last as long as the tower itself, is working ; and the gigantic pendulum is swinging with a noiseless beat. Connections havo yet to be be made between the clocif and tho four big dials, and the clock itself has to be encased with glass. The mechanism of tho pendulum requires winding up once in eight days; but the power that sounds the chimes will require attention every other day.

Poultry-rearing has never before been known to be conducive to loquacity. But the experience of the Wellington Society, gained at its annual dinner, proves the contrary. The function began shortly after nine at night, and speech followed speech with rapid succession, till after the chimes had rung in two o’clock next morning. Still, there was a desire to continue, and there was some excellent ground traversed, though at the last a twinge of acrimony crept in, making visitors aware, for the first time, that there had been bickerings in the near past. The succoss of the show, howover, seems to have buried a vast amount of former vindictiveness. —Lance. The Frasertown correspondent of the Wairoa Guardian contributes the following on the re-adjustment of the boundaries of the electoral districts: Tossing the district from pillar to post the Commissioners do not seem to know what to do with Wairoa. It will be just as well for us to be attached to the post as to the pillar for all the good we get from either. It certainly seems more natural to belong to Napier than to Gisborne, which district having no trade, can have no sympathy with us. The interests of Wairoa are the interests of Napier, and in helping and representing this district politically the member for Napier or Hawke’s Bay will be benefitting Napier itself. I do not think we shall suffer by the change. It probably will mean for one thing that we in Frasertown may have to wait a little longer for the bridge. I live in hopes, however, that with the establishment of a dairy factory and the carrying of the loan an era of prosperity will dawn upon the district, which will justify the Council in undertaking the work themselves. How we have been disappointed about that bridge It is an old saying, “ Put not your trust in princes." Neither should people put any trust in colonial democratic leaders, for all thev apparently study is their own interests and glorification. WADE'S WORM FlGS—the Wonderful Worm Worriers—are a safe and sure remedy; '.a Is boxes; sold everywhere.
