Henry Philfipson, aged 55, proprietor oi Burlington Restaurant was taken ill this morning outside tiie resturant, and died sliortly afterwards from tiie bursting of a blood-vessel. .THAMES, last night The Thames fishermen, who supply a large quantity of fish for the Auckland market, strongly oppose the application for resumption of trawling in the Itauraki Gulf. They claim that the trawlers have depleted the beds, disturbed the fish, and considerably reduced the local supply. .Since the trawlers' ceased operations, owing to the withdrawal of the Hauraki Gulf from the proclaimed area, the catches have been gradually increasing, but.it is estimated that it will take three years before the Gulf becomes as prolific as before. A petition has been lodged by a number of ratepayers regarding the rating poll taken at Hastings on Monday. Tiie petitioners allege that the voting papers were improperly interfered with in the polling booth, and that the returning officer exceeded his duty. A severe shock of earthquake was felt at J.O a.in. WANGANUI, last night. Charles Weighman has been remantred till Wednesday on a charge of failing to comply with an order of the Conn, for the maintenance of bis wife, made two years ago. The police were unable to trace accused until recently, when he was arrested in Sydney, and brought over by Detective Bishop. Bail oil £l5O was allowed, the father, of accused depositing the money. Exceptionally heavy frosts have been experienced on the last four WELLINGTON, last night. Lieutenant-Colonel Gudgeon is gazetted Chief Judge and Pa Ariki Judge of the Cook and other Islands Land Titles Court, recently constituted.
