MARQUIS OF LINLITHGOW

FAREWELL LETTER FROM THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL. lUS IDEALS .SHATTERED. By telegraph—Dress AssociationCopyright., SYDNEY, July la. j Lord Hopetoun, in a long letter of farewell to the Federal Acting Premier, says . “ I had dreamed my dreams, 1 had formed my ambitions uq to your Go-vernor-General's position, and as to the manner in which I could best serve the Empire and* Commonwealth.

“ However mistaken these ambitions may have been ; however incorrect in perspective time may prove these dreams, I cannot feel ashamed of having indulged my fancy by contemplation of them, for assuredly they were neither mean nor selfish. “My constant desire has been to place the qlfiee which I filled on a pedestal ; this not for my own sake, but because I believed it to be the best way to make it an oflice of real usefulness to the Empire, and one acceptable to the people of this country. ‘‘ I know now that 1 fell into an error not uncommon in new communities. 1 set to work to overbuild myself ; that without being sure of my foundations, and if one day I found myself sitting on the ground, surrounded by the ruins of my own ideal, I 'have no reason to cqmplain, for I have myself to blame. “It is possible my successor may find amongst this debris a fragment here and there which may prove of 60tno use to him in building up his structure on a sealo, it may bo, less ambitious than rnino.”
