A very pretty cantata, entitled “ Tho Moabitess,” has been for some time in rehearsal by Wesley Church Choir, assisted by soveral friends, and will be given in about four weeks. The music is very good, and the practices so far give promise of a very successful rendering. Lovers of good music have a treat in store.

The social is a very) populao function, and in order to keep it select ticket holders are asked to present their invitations at the door, 'l'he gallery is to he open at the charge of Is.. A hall was given at Timaru in honor of the return of the Sixth and Seventh Contiugonts, and the proclamation of peace. The function was held in Messrs J. Mill and Co.’s spacious store, over 2000 people being present. The decorations were on a very lavish scale, some hundreds of pounds being spent in that connection. A striking feature was a band rotunda, built up in the centre of the room, in tho shape of a huge crown, lighted by a myriad of fairy lights.

There was a crowded attendance at the Empire Rink last night. The race resulted in a boil over, Vosper winning, after an exciting [race, Adair being a good second. Owing to a misunderstanding, Larsen retired when going strong, and thus threw away a first-class chance. Eaton, whoso handicap was a severe one, retired on the tenth round, leaving Vosper, Adair, and Porter to fight out the finish. After a sterling set-to, the trio finished in the order mentioned. Judging by the applause accorded, the win was a popular one. The exhibition of fancy and trick skating by Mr Alf. Skipworth was a most creditable display, and proved Mr Skipworth's title to the colony’s championship. Tho rink will open this afternoon, but there will be no evening session. Tho Gisborne Racing Club brought their Steeplechase Meeting to a close yesterday, and were again favored with beautiful weather. The attendance was largo, and speculation fairly brisk. Mr F. Rhodes was one of the most successful owners, obtaining four wins during tho meeting, two being with A.B.N. and one each with Cronjo and The Gryphon. Mr J. A. Harding had a double win yesterday with Tauhci and Soultina, the former winning tho Te Hapara Handicap and Soultina the Hack race. Mr M. Maher was engaged to ride Tauhei in the Hurdles on the opening day, hut owing to meeting with a slight accident he was unable to do so. On Wednesday last, Mr Maher was'exereising a chestnut colt belonging to Mr Carroll, when ho was thrown and had his ankle badly sprained, Messrs Groom, O'Reilly, and Morrigan, who were injured on Thursday last, were about again yesterday, having made a speedy recovery. A bumper house should be the order on Monday evening at the Theatre Royal, to witness the reappearance here of that popular theatrical manager, Mr Edmund Montgomery and his clever company of entertainers. From press clippings we are bound to come to the conclusion that of its own particular kind, this is tho best company on the road. Since appearing in Gisborne last Mr Montgomery has successfully toured Australia and Tasmania, concluding with a five weeks’ season at the Queen’s Hall, Sydney. Mr Montgomery has. secured the best novelties and sensations that money can buy, and the show he gives here on Monday and Tuesday nights should be a real startler. Besides the large number of biograph items, there is a clever company headed by Mr E. Montgomery, the popular tenor, who will render those story ballads, beautifully illustrated. These are at present the rage in London and New York, and have always .been associated with Mr Montgomery’s showjin this country. Mr Harry Hall is a comedian of much merit. He has the knack of being exceedingly funny, and is also refined. Mr Fred Gibson is a coon impersonator and banjo-specialist. Miss Frances Beverly (contralto i is a pupil of the late Signor Carmime Morley. Mr Edgar Collins is in charge of ths musical portion. Taken altogether this show is well worthy of liberal patronage,
