The following are the handicaps for the mile race at the Empire Skating liink tonight ; Eaton scratch, Eerris 1:1 lap B > Larsun, Adair, and Porter 2.1 laps, Vosper 2:( laps. Captain Edwin wived at noon yostcrday :—" Gale between north and east and south- cast after 12 hours from now ; glass fall, tides high, sea heavy, weathor warmer, with rain.” Mr A. J. Gallichan, formerly of the Otaki Dairy Company, has been appointed manager of thcNuhaka Dairy Company. We wish the Company ail success in their venture.. The many friends of Mr R. Sim, formerly of Gisborne, are pleased to welcome him back on a holiday visit. He ts Registrar of the Native Land Court at Wellington. Yesterday morning a sitting of Hie Terawhiti Native Land Council took place, all the members being present, and Judge Gill presiding, IQ was decided to adjourn the sitting until 10 on Monday morning. Mr 'J'. C. Dawson, formerly of Gisborne, and'latterly or Napier, has been transferred to Messrs Archibald Clark and Son’s Wellington branch. The promotion is well deserved, and many Gisborne friends will extend their congratulations to the popular) representative of a popular firm.

The following important business will be brought beforo the Gisborne branch of the Farmers’ Union on Saturday: -Election of member on Provincial Executive ; Native Laud Question ; Mortgage Tax ; grant for railway. As Parliament is sitting, members are urgently requested to bring forward auy matters affecting the farmers’ interest, and the bonefit of the district.

Yesterday, Mr 11. M. Porter’s handsome and spirited .pair, of ponies were frightened by a dog. They started off with the, buggy at a lively pace. The buggy was capsized, and the ponies for some distance dragged it bottom upwards, from along the Riverside road, on the Whataupoko. Mr Porter was about to bring in a lot of his fine birds for the poultry show to-day, when the mishap occurred.

The annual poultry show commences to-day, and there is every reason to believe that it will be a great success in every respect. The entries form a record for the show ti and it is probable that the public interest in the annual fixture has considerably increased. The show is to lx; held in McFarlane’s Hall and tiio Committee have been making excellent preparations for the occasion. There should he a large attendance at the show.

A. feature of the races at the Park yesterday was the excellent starting of Mr S. Boland, who displayed great judgment in handling his fields. The horses were not kept long at the starting post, and it was the exception to see the field break away. The Sec e.tary, Mr M. G. Nasmith, and the officials of the Club, did all in their power to promote the .success of the gathering. Mr H. Martin had charge of the totalisators, and the turns were turn shed with the utmost promptitude. The pretty grounds at ■ the Park were in first-class order, and reflected great credit upon the obliging caretaker, Mr C. Goodman.

The return of Montgomery’s entertainers to Gisborne is anticipated with pleasure. Mr Montgomery claims to have a more • superior show than when he visited us before. The new subjects ho has to show include some of the most recent of events from all parts of the world. The Bio- '• graph novelties include 11 The Marvellous Graggs.” This compatiy of acrobats recently toured New Zealand under Dix at the enormous salary of .£2OO per week, Cinquevalii in his marvellous act, Rosie Aquinaldo, champion contortionist of the world, the four Lottos in their hair raising bicycle act on an angled track of 05 "degrees, the American Flip Flap Railway, Santos Dumont’s Airship, winner o' the"grand prize recently presented in Baris for his flight round the Eiffel Tower, Capt. Deleware’s sensational net in a den of performing lions and; tigers, the pantom m' of Littlo Red RidiDg Hood, and a host of short and laughable comedies and sketchos. A mild sensation was caused in Whataupoko about 11 o'clock yesterday mornin". At that hour, a pair of ponies attacked to a buggy were seen careering down the Riverside road in the direction of town. The driver was missing, but his absence did not seem to concetti the ponies greatly, and they brought the vehicle along at a lively pace, A plueky attempt was made to stop the runaway by a lady, but the ponies had too much way on. and the attempt failed. Opposite Mr Garrett’s private residence, the ponies were brought up with a round turn by the buggy capsizing. They took the corner rather sharply, with the inevitable result. Then the few spectators who witnessed the incident saw a no\el sight. The buggy contained several hampers, and the lfds of these flew open on being unceremoniously clumped on tne ground. The air as if by magic was filled with prize poultry. Langshans. Dorkings, ; Leghorns, Wyandottes, and Brahmapootras flew about in all directions, and I set up a vigorous protest against the indignity to which tkoy had been subjected. The ureater number of the birds crossed over to Mr Garrett’s, where their owner, Mr H. M. Porter, put in a busy time in the afternoon recapturing his feathered mizes. It appears that the ponies thought they were nuite capable of btinging the birds in to the poultry show, and at a signal from a dog they starlet* on from Mr Porter’s residence without'waiting for the driver. The buggy was somewhat damaged, but the ponies, which belong to | Mr William Cooper, of Hamanatua, were little the worse for the adventure. i

The arrangements for catering at the Park race-course yesterday were spies- | didly earned out by Mrs Erskir.e, ar.d the lunch supplied was an excellent one. even better than what is obtained at race meetings in the four chief centres. The strong measures taken by Sergeant Sidcfells during recent race meetings in tl.e direction of ridding the town of the spieler element have borne excellent results, and it was a matter (if general comment yesterday at the Park that the undesirable fraternity were conspicuous by their abs cnce. The meeting was uf a most orderly character, and everyth ng pas .- ed off pleasantly. The New Century Talking Co., 'Wellington, have tne largest variety of phonographs, graphophones, gramophones, records, and supplies of every description in the colony, and receive fresh shipments every three weeks, including all the latest novelties, etc. They supply machines from 27s tid to £25. An advertisement appears in another column. A great amount of interest is being manifested in the handicap race which is to take place at the Empire Skating Rink on Friday night. The fact that all competitors have accepted speaks volumes for the fairness of the handicaps, and an interesting contest may he confidently looked forward to. The exhibition of fancy skating by Mr Alf. Skipworth 1 champion of New Zealand), will be well worth witnessing, and will doubtless prove a great attraction.
