' A BATCH OF RESOLUTIONS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, last night. Tho Municipal Conference to-day ugreed to a resolution that section 21 of the Public Works Act Amendment Act, 1000 (in regard to the width of streets), shall not operate in any case whore the Council shall at a special meeting resolve to certify to tho District Land Registrar that it does not require its streets to bo widened ; that the proviso to section 230 of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1900, be amended to tho effect that provision for the minimum width of streets (66ft) shall not apply within exempted areas ; that Government be requested to fix the maximum cost to local bodies of conducting licensing elections ; that in boroughs property-owners be compelled to keep one foot of footway from the boundary-line of the property fronting on the streets free from weeds, grass, etc.; that the Government be asked to amend the Rating on Unimproved Valueß Act, 1896, by deleting section 20 (exempting certain rates), or as an alternative that the Government be specially asked to make provisions whereby, by a special order or otherwise, Councils may accept rating on the Unimproved Value Act, 1896, in respect of any or all of the rates mentioned in Section 20 of the Act, thereby enabling them to make and levy such rate or rates on unimproved value; that section 352 of the Act, which contains provisions to ensure safety in lodging houses, hotels, and houses, should be altered so as to refer to buildings occupied by more than one family ; that section 350 should be amended in the direction of providing that recreation lands not exceeding one rood purchased or acquired for the purposes of sub-section 1 may bo leased to persons willing to erect or provide places of enjoyment and recreation. The Mayor of Sydenham’s proposition that Government be urged to introduce at the ensuing session of Parliament a State Fire Insurance Bill, and to use every endeavor to have it passed into law, was lost.
