At the meeting of tho Gisborne School Committee last night sympathetic references were made to the health of Mr G. Humphreys, a member who had had a vory serious accident to his eye. On tho motion of Mr Hookey, it was resolved to send a letter expressing sympathy with Mr Humphreys, and it was decided to grant him leave of absence. The quarterly mooting of tho Wesley Church officials was held at tho Parsonage, on Thursday evening. Returns of membership showed a substantial increase. The income for the quarter more than met expenditure, and reduced the small dobit carried forward from last quarter. The Sunday School is increasingly prosperous, and has a good staff of teachers. The hearty thanks of the meeting were passed to Mr G. S. Vincent for his decorative work in the church. The meeting was most harmonious throughout, though somewhat disturbed by the fireboll.

A charge was heard at the Police Court yesterday against William Jas. Can Lie for procuring liquor for a prohibited person, William Henry Morse. Evidence was given by Constable Doyle, but after hearing the defendant, for whom Mr Jones appeared, His Worship decided that the case could not he sustained, hut remarked that Ihc police were justified in bringing tho matter before the Court ; though lie had dismissed the case, 1 lie was not satisfied with defendant's actions.

Extensive preparations are being made for the ninth annual show of the Gisborne Poultry Fanciers’ Club, and the gathering promises to he a great event. A committee meeting was held iast evening, when it was stated that the special prize iist was larger this year than it had hitherto been, and it was hoped that there-would he a proportionate increase in the number of entries received. Entries close this evening, and the show is to he held on Friday, and Saturday next, July 11th and 12th. ' > | A presentation was made last evening to 'Mr J. S. Dcds, on itlie eve oi his departure for Vancouver, for which place lie leaves this morning. The ceremony tood place at tne British Empire Hotel, where a number of Mr Dods’ friends assembled to wish him good luck. The presentation, which lack the form of a handsome traveling hug, was, made ,l\y (Mr Gordon Witty, who made an excellent speech, expressing the good feeling that Mr Dods’.many friends had for him.; They, hoped some day to see him return to Gisborne Mr Dods suitably replied, and a couple of hours were afterwards devoted to social intercourse.

There was a large attendance of members at the Star of New Zealand Tent (Female Branch) of Rechabitos on Thursday evening, The officers for the ensuing term were installed, as follows 0.R., Sister H- Birch; D.R., Sister M. Birroll; B S., Sister L. File ; Treasurer, Sister M. Driller (re-elected); Secretary, Sister \V. Wallace (re-elected) ; C.S., Sister MoDowell; L., Sister E. Howland; 1.G., Sister E. McGrath j B.S. of C. 8., Sister F. Filo ; L.S. of C.R., Sister R. McGrath. A lot of routine business was disposod of. Arrangements in connection with the social on the 17th inst. are well in hand, and it should prove a great success. Two candidates were proposed. All will wish the Order, which has nearly completed a year of its career, much prosperity. Through the courtesy of Mr Carroll, who is always to the fore in matters of acclimatisation, there arrived last week from the Government hatchery, Masterton, six pairs of New Zealand paradise ducks, which aro intended for distribution throughout the district with tho object of introducing these handsome birds. Tho ducks are at present being looked after byMr A. F. Konnedy, and will be divided among Messrs Dewing, Acland Hood, and other prominent enthusiasts in acclimatisation matters. The birds are perfectly tame, and yesterday one of them wandered from Mr Kennedy’s grounds into the street. We understand that it is still missing, and anyone who may have found it is requested to kindly return it to Mr Kennedy.

At the meeting of the Gisborne School Committee last night a letter was read from Miss Barbara Old, offering her services in case of the Committee desiring to start classes for cookery. Accompanying the letter there were some excellent testimonials, including one from the Christchurch School of Cookery. Members, by their remarks, showed themselves favorable to the establishment- of such classes, the Chairman remarking that such tuition would be better for girls than Latin. The Secretary stated that tho addition to the buildings would be made in the summer holidavs, when there would be an opportunity make provision for such classes. Mr Graham said that would be a long time to wait, and in the meantime they might lose the opportunity of securing the services of such an expert. It was mentioned that Miss Old was a partner with Miss Telford, and Mr File suggested that some arrangement mightbe made without waitin" for the extension of the building. On the°motion of Mr Graham, it was resolved that tho Chairman and Messrs File and Graham be a sub-committee to make enquiries on the subject,
