Yesterday two attempts at suicide were made ‘by a man named William Warren. lie made unsuccessful efforts to shoot himself in the afternoon, and Was removed to the hospital for examnation. Whilst a constable was undressing him lie suddenly pulled a razor, from under his clothes, and drew the weapon ac::oss‘ his breast, inflicting a flesh wound. He is now under restraint. A DEADLOCK, ELTI-lAM LICENSING CASE, ,(Fer Press Association). NEW PLYMOUTH, last night. A deadlock occurred to-day in connection with the Licensing Committee. At the annual meeting application 'for a new license at Eltham was considered the license at Norman by lapsing in order to create a vacancy. The Committee decided to give its decision on July Ist, as if Hawkins’ application had been granted, then there would have been an extra license in existence. To-day there was no quorum, two country members being absent. One was not present at the annual meeting, and even if ho attended to-day would not be competent to adjudicate. The other was urgently wired to be present at 3 o’clock.failing which the chairman talks of a mandamus to compel his attendance.
