MINE EXPLOSION.

MANY MINERS KILLED. At Fernie (8.C.) a terrible disaster occurred in the Coal Creek mines on May 20. There was an explosion, duo to dust. So many miners were killed that the Board of Trade was compelled to take relief moasures, and to call upon the Provincial Government for assistance, Large cities were also called upon for aid. A Government Inspector of Mines >vas at Fernie when the explosion took place. It is not announced what number of men perishod, but forty-nine bodies wore taken out of the higher levels, and it was known that it was impossible for many to he alive in the depths after tho fire and gas had done thoir work.

Some were killed by rocks, somo by fire, and others by after-damp and gas.
