HAWKE’S BAY JOCKEY CLUB.

[By Telegraph —l’reas Association.] Napier, last night,

Tiio Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club wore favored with splendid weather to-day for the opening day of their winter meeting. There was a very large attendance, many country visitors who had come to town for the purposo of participating in the Coronation celebrations, being present. The racing was good, but the course was rather heavy, and this partly accounted for the success of the outsiders in the majority of the races. The principal event, the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles, fell to the Wanganui mare, TBe Hempio, and the Hon. J. D. Ormond’s representative, Kelpy, secured the Ladies’ Bracelet. The club introduced an innovation in tbe working of the totalisators, two machines paying out on the first and second horses, while the third machine was reserved for straight out betting, paying out on the first horse only. The now departure was only moderately successful, the bulk of tbe general public seeming to prefer tbe two dividend system. The sum of £5146 was put through the totalisators, of which £1124 was invested on the straight out machine. The following are the results : Trial Steeplechase, about 2 miles. Mrs J. B.
