MATCHES OF A STEAMER BLOWN OFF.

MELBOURNE, June 23. The steamer Glaucus, from Newcastle, with coal, met with a rough passage. Owing to the severe weather the hatches were battened down and an accumulation of gas caused a, severe explosion, which blew the covering off the hatches. .The boatswain was - badly burned.

(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night.; £ An explosion of gas occurred ill a . house in Franklin road on Sunday) night. 'Vlie house was owned by Mr D. Parker and occupied by a widow* Mrs Davies, and family. A strong smell of gas was found in the front * rooms. James Turner struck .[aj match, which caused a great explosion** which smashed the glass in the. front windows and blew the bay window * clean out, besides doing other consi-w. derable damage. George Williams had his face and hands burned. Mrs and Miss Davis were also burned_ None* however, are very sesiously hurt* ' V
