Trnmper and Hopkins opened the Australian innings, and both sot to work briskly. With 10 to his credit, Trumper was caught by Humphries off Bestwick. One wicket for 17 runs. y- Hill partnered Hopkins, but did not ■ sjy. Ho made a single, and then Besb’wick clean bowled him. Two wickets for 20, Darling came to Hopkins' assistance. Play became nice and fast, and during a long and fruitful stand both batsmen gave an excellent display of their powers, Darling eventually retiring, bowled by Olliviorro. Ho showed brilliant driving and cutting. The partnership added 113 runs. Three for 133. Hopkins had 55 to his credit when Gregory joined him. The newcomor’s life, though short, was eventful. After scoring a singlo and being let off a sharp chance in tho slips, he was caught at the wickots. Four for 142. Hopkins and Armstrong played out to time, tho score being four for 156, Hopkins 68 aud Armstrong 9. Hopkins played a fine dashing game, marred by two chances.
