BOWLING.
THE SHIELD MATCHES,
.At the bowling green on Saturday a match in the Shield contest took place, the competing teams being Gisborne and Whataupoko. The former was represented by Quigley, Humphreys, McGowan, and Ponsford (skip), and Whataupoko by Orr, Nicholas, Martin, and Simson (skip). A keen game resulted. The town team went off with a slight lead, but were soon overhauled by Whataupoko, both Martin and Simson being in great form. The suburban team at one time had a good lead, but the town team rallied, and towards the close of the game had a good deal the best of the play. Thoy could not, however, get on terms with Whataupoko, who won, amidst great excitement, by a point, the scores being 22 to 21. SimsoD, the Whataupoko skip, played a sterling game, as also did Martin. Although the Whataupoko toam has secured a double victory over the two Gisborne rinks, the former are not in as good a position as Gisborne for the Shield, owing to the score being on the aggregate, and Gisborne having recorded two good wins against Katti. The town teams have now finished their four matches, and have a total score of a hundred points, whilst Whataupoko has 45 points, and Kaiti 34 for two games. For either of the latter to win they will have to soore 101 points. Whataupoko has therefore to get 56 points in two games and Kaiti 67 points. In a single gome of sixty-three heads, Massey beat Gaudin by 57 to 49 points, the former playing a consistent and steady game throughout.
