GRAND NATIONAL MEETING. ROYAL CONQUEROR WINS THE HURDLES. AN EVENTFUL RACE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, last night. For the Auckland Racing. Club’s Grand Meeting, the second day, the weather was beautifully fine, aud the attendance large. Speculation was brisk, the totalisator receipts for the day amounting to .£9,681.

Trtsham was made a hot favorite for the Grand National Hurdles, and ran "away, from his field across the top stretch, but came to grief two fences from homo, bringing down Cavaliero, Frost,and Rufus. This left Royal Conqueror, who was second favorito, to come on and win with ease from Mars. The following are tho results : Maiden Hurdles, R}.miles.

The field had not reached the second hurdle before Medallius was in front, and the son of Medallion remained in front over the next three jumps. Sophia then drew on terms, but a few strides further on Medallius moved out again in the run to the sixth hurdle, and was having all the best of it when they came to tho last hurdle, when he fell, leaving Sophia a couple of lengths in front of Frances Love, joy, but the latter had tho best of it in the run homo, and won by three lengths from Sophia, who was four lengths to the good of Hippowai. Mazona was first to show up in front, but along the back stretch Maroon and Gold went to the front, and as they drew up to tho cutting was a length in front of Sandy, Mazona, Sly Miss, and Despatch. Across the top stretch Up-fco Data threaded his way through the field, and was with the loader as they came into the straight a length in front of Sly Miss and Recoil. In the run home Upto-Date drew out and won by two lengths easily from Sly Mis 3, who was three parts of a length to the good of Commodore. Then came Maroon and Gold and Romeo. Cavaliero was soon in front, and showed Tresham the way over tho first hurdle, but at the half-mile post Bellman took charge, and was a length in front of tho first-named pair as the fence was taken, and hero Princess of Thule lost her rider. Bellman took tho hurdle ontoring the straight in advance of Royal Conqueror and Tresham, and through tho bottom turn was just in front of Tresham, Cavaliero, and Frost. Along the back stretch Bellman and Tresham, who were now on terms, placed a gap of ten lengths betweon themselves and Cavaliero and Rufus, but as the cutting was again entered Bellman was done with, and Tresham ran away from his field across tho top stretch, but in negotiating the hurdle at the distance Tresham came to grief, bringing down Rufus and Frost, and Cavaliero unseated his rider. This left Royal Conqueror iD front, and the latter landing over tho last fence saiel.y came on and won comfortably by six lengths from Mars, who was a length to the good of Waiwera. Bellman was fourth. Then came Evening Wonder and Roseplot, with Gobo last. Time, 4.1 ; tote 2081, divs. £4 8s and £5 15s 6d.

Hylas and Sudden mado the running in the early stages of the race, but as they came down the hill for the last time Cannongate was leading Sultana by a couple of lengths, and took the sod-wall into the course a, couple of lengths in front of him. Here Dingo fell. Cannongate landed safely over tho last hurdle, and had "no difficulty in winning by twenty length's from Sultana, who was a like distance in front of Hylos. Kowhai was ‘fourth. Lynch’s Golden Rose, Dceloy... 1 268 Douglas Gordon's Ostiak, Jenkins 2 28 T. McKay's Military, Julian ... 3 Also started : 58 Bnttleaxe, 258 For inula, Sl7 Scotty, 233 St. Olga, 153 Soffi, 51 Ragabrasb, 52 Field Battery, 48 Lady Bell, 77 Sundial, 32 Winsome, 47 King Edward, 27 Jewellery, 34 Hikipene. St. Olga was in the van for the first couple of furlongs, when she wa3 joined by Ostiak, and the pair showed the way past the half-mile post. Ostiak was first round the home turn, but at the lawn rails Golden Rose drew out and won by a clear length from Ostiak, Military was a length away third, and Formula fourth. Time, 1.32*. Totalisator 1763, divs. £22 9s and .£1 9s 6d.

Knpai moved away in front, and held the lead till the hurdle at the back was reached, where Peacock fell. Ascending the hill Stockman ran away from his field, and maintained a commanding lead from Kapai till the hill was climbed for the last time, when he was challenged by Hinemoa and Clarion, but the latter could not reach the leader, who won easily by six lengths from Hinemoa, with Clarion a couple of lengths away third.
