GRAND NATIONAL MEETING,

THE GUARD WINS THE STEEPLE CHASE. [By Telegraph—Press Association.]

Auckland, last night. The Auckland Racing Club’s Grand National Meeting opened at Ellcrslio to-day. Tho weather was fine, but tho going was slightly holding, owing to tho luto rains. There was a largo attendance. Speculation was brisk, and the totalisator receipts for the day amounted to Ti 1,930. Cavaliero started a hot favorite for the Great Northern Steeplechase, but was in trouble a mile from home. The Guard ran into the lead as the hill was ascended for the last time, and boat Frost by three lengths, tho latter making a big effort to get up. Tho following arc the results :

44 Pollack. Hylas, Clarion, and Matarawa wore in the van at short intervals for tho most part of the journey, but at the last hurdle Clarion blundered badly and fell back. However, as thoy stretched out for the run home the two closed up, and an exciting finish resulted in Hylas securing the verdict by a head from Clarion, who was the same distance in front of Matarawa. Dingo moved away in front, and ascend* mg the hill was leading Princess of Thule by four lengths, with Moifaa six lengths away, and then came CannoDgate and Frost. Landing over tho stone wall into the course, Dingo was still in front, and over the water jump had a good lead of Princess of Thule, Moifaa, Cannongate, Frost, and Rufus. As they ran up the back of the course again Dingo cleared out from the field, and over tho post-and-rails ou the top of the hill was „six lengths to the good of Cannongate ; then came Princess of Thule, Gobo, and Frost, Rufus having fallen at the hurdlos prior to the hill. Descending the hill Cannongate and Dingo were on terms with Princess of Thule three lengths away, but over tho douDle in front of the stand Cannongato hal the advantage, and here Gobo lost his rider. Around the back'tho Guard closed up to the leader, followed by Moifaa, and as the hill was ascended for the last time he assumed the lead over the stone wall into the course. The Guard was three lengths to the good of Cannongate, and landing safely over the last hurdle, won by three lengths from Frost, who was a neck in front of Princess of Thule, Cannongate was fourth. Valedictory made most of the running, with Tresham and Hippowai as her nearest attendants, but in the last bit Tresham took command, and coming on won by a couple of lengths with ease from Medallius, who was half a length in front of Sophia. Jewellery was first away, but before many strides had been left behind Formula took charge, and along tho back stretch was half-a-length to tho good of BeddiDgton and St. Olga, with Highlander making up ground. Formula was still disputing the ground as they dashed down to the half-mile post, and entering the straight was closely attended by Highlander ; but at tho lawn-rails Beddington came with a rattle, and scored by a length and a-half from Highlander, who was a neck to the good of Formula.
