STEYN PARALYSED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, June 1. A Reuter message states that Steyn is suffering from paralysis, caused by abstention from (? detention at) the Vereeniging Conference. He is now at Krugersdorp on parole.
LORD ROSEBERY. Lord Rosebery, speaking at Leeds, said that popular control in the Education Bill was merely nominal. The corn tax was the prelude to a zollvorein, conferring on the colonies control of the British fiscal system. While unable summarily to dismiss any proposal for closer union, he would requiro convincing arguments before he would accept this.
UNITED STATES ARMY. Washington, Juno 1. On Presideut Roosevelt’s directions, Mr Root has reduced the army to 66,497.
