THE FIRST TEST MATCH,
By Telegraph—Proas Association—Copyright London, May 29. The first teat match between Australia and England commenced on Birmingham Ground to-day, in fino but cloudy weather. Six thousand spectators were present when play began. Trumble, Carter, and Saunders stood out of the Australian team, Saunders being confined to bed with a sore throat. Mason, Hayward, Llewellyn was omitted from the English team, Lockwood being included. Maclaren won the toss and sent tho Austra)ians"to the field. Maclaren and Fry opened the English innings, the attack being entrusted to Jone 3 and Noble.
Tho start was sensational. Maclaren opened quietly and had made five, when Fry faced Jones, and Kelly standing back from the wicket caught the Sussex crack beforo he bad scored. One out for five.
Eanjitsinhji joined his captain. Each batsman added four, and then making a foolish attempt to steal a single, Maclaren was run out. The ball was hit to the third man, who returned it before the batsmen had crossed. Two wickets for 13. Jackson camo next. Whon the total was at 25 Trumpor replaced Jones. Armstrong wont on in placo of Noble at 34. One run later Eanjitsinhji was clean bowled with the second ball of Armstrong’s first over. Three for 35. Tyldesloy filled tho vocancy, and opened bis account by bitting Armstrong for two fourers. Jones relieved Armstrong at 43, and Howell displaced Trumper at 50, which appeavod at the end of 70 minutes’ P 1 ay. Tho fielding of tho Australians was superb. Jackson knocked three fourers off Jones, and Tyldesloy drovo Howell for five, as tbo result of which Noblo replaced Jones at 69. Despito tho changes, tho seoro mounted stealily, and the batsmen showed brilliant form.
At the luncheon adjournment the board showed three wickets for 99, Jackson with 47 and Tyldesloy 29. On resuming, tho score was carried to 112, and then Jackson played Jones on to tho wicket. He played a very fine Innings, lasting an hour and a half. Four wickets for 112. Tyldesley’s contribution was 36. Lilloy partnered Tyldesloy, but made a short stay. After scoring a couple, he put up a skier oil Noblo, Jones taking the catch at mid-off. Five for 121.
Tyldesley was previously just missed by Jones at mid-off from Nobie, when his score was 43. Ho was again missed while still 43 by Darling at mid-on, off Armstrong, and gave a hot chance on the next ball to Armstrong off his own bowling. Hirst became associated with Tyldesloy, and a good stand was made. Tho scores aro :

A good catcli in the slips by Armstrong disposed of Hirst'. Six wickets for 212. The partnership of Hirst with Tyldesley was responsible for 91 in 89 minutes. Jossop filled the vacancy, but his career was short-lived, Hopkins effecting an easy catch at deep cover-point. Seven wickets for 239. Braund was clean bowled by Jones after getting to double figures. Tyldesley completed his century for three and a-balf hours’ work. His cutting was beautiful. Eight wickets for 264. Lockwood joined the Lancashire professional, but the latter’s time had now come, and he got leg-before to Howell. He was four hours and twenty minutes at the wicket—a splendid batting performance. Nine wickets for 295. Lockwood played vigorously. Rhodes partnered him, tho two adding 56 in 38 minutes.
