RELICS OF MAORILAND.
DEPUTATION TO MR CARROLL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, last night. Tho Hon. J. Carroll was waited ou by members of the Institute and other citizens for the purpose of putting in a claim to have the rocently-discovered Maori antiquities deposited in tho Auckland Museum. Mr Carroll said he thought the colony was greatly indebted to the Auckland Institute for what it had done to preservo the relics of tho Maori race, and he considered the claim put forward that the Auckland Museum should bocome the repository of such curios as were found within tho Auckland district was not unreasonable. With regard to the recent find, Mr Carroll stated that the Maoris had put forward a claim, and he had instructed tho Stipendiary Magistrate to proceed at once to Waimamaku, and investigate tho matter. In doing so, he also instructed the Magistrate that if the claim of the Maoris was established, he was to request them to hand over the relics to the Nativo Minister, with a view to depositing them in the Auckland Museum. He had received a telegram from the Magistrate stating that the Maoris acceded to his request, and tho relies would be forwarded to Auckland.
