For the Takapuna Jockey Club Winter Meeting, first day, the woather was fino, with light showers, but the''going was heavy owing to the late rains. Tho totalisator receipts for the day wero -£7441. Tho results were : Handicap Maiden Hurdles.—Hippowai (Morrigan) 1, Tho Miner 2, Lady Dash 3. Scratched : Reclaimer, Perseverance, Medallious, All Fours, Sophia, and Report. Won by a length. Tresham fell, and Sirdar dislodged his rider. Time,. 3.21. Diva., inside Hls 6s 6d and 111 15s, outside Hls 4s 6d and HI 4s 6d. Handicap Maiden Plate.—Francis Lovejoy (Speakman) 1, Drudge 2, Niirua 3. Repetition and Minna were soratched. Won by a good length. Time 1.40.}. Divs., inside H 3 10s 6d and HI Is 6d, outside H 4 3s and HI 2s 6d.
Birthday Handicap.—Mr A. Tclfer’s ch m Matamataharakiki, 7.2, Satman, 1 ; Military 2, Highlander 3. Scratched: Hikipene. Jewellery made most of the running, but Military, who led into the straight, was cut down by Matamataharakiki, who won comfortably by two lengths. Time 2.25 2-5. Divs., inside JG6 14s 6d and £1 18s 6d, outsido £6 15s 6d and £1 15s 6d. First Handicap Hurdles. —Playdn (Fergus) 1, Evening Wonder 2, Tim 3. Scratched : Cavaliero, Sudden, Hippowai, and Firefly. Time, 4.20. Divs., inside £5 7s 6d and £1 10s 6d, outside £5 14s 6d and £1 8s 6d. Haydn won by four lengths, aftor fighting it out with Evening Wonder. Handicap Maiden Steeplechase.—Cavaliero (Howard) 1, Sultana 2, Tuni 3. Scratched: Bellman, Leona, All-Fours, Hector, Perseverance, and Reporter. Cavaliero won easily. Time, 4.57. First Pony Handicap. Sportsman (Speakman) 1, St. Loanda 2, Sea Spray 3. Scratched: Polly Perkins. Won easily by two lengths. Time, 1.10 2-5. Divs., inside £9 9s and £1 ss, outside £9 2s 6d and £1 12s 6d. Ecyal Handicap.—Scotty (Phillips) 1, Takapuna 2, Camille 3. Scratched: Matamataharakihi, Hikipene, Eosiphele, Gold Web, and La Polish. Won by throe lengths. Time, 1.10 2-5. Divs., inside £5 12s 6d and £1 17s 6d, outside £3 16s and £1 13s 6d. | Special to Times. | Auckland, last night. The Takapuna J.C. Winter meeting commenced yesterday. The course was very heavy. Among the many present were the Hon. J. Carroll, Messrs Wi Pere, M.H.R., Barry, and Martin, from Gisborne. The Gisborne horse Medallious did not start owing to injuries sustained on the trip up in the Tarawera from Gisborne last Thursday. The owner is afraid that Medallious will be a non-starter at the Takapuna meeting, but the horse may make a recovery by the winter meeting of the Auckland Racing Club held in June.
DUNEDIN RACES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, last night. The weather was cold but fine for the second day of the D.J.C. meeting. Tho sum of £3741 10s was put through the machine, making a total of £7248 10s for the meeting, as compared with £8046 for last year. The results were : Hurdles.—Huku 1, Vulcan 2, Tufts 3. Won by a length and half. Had Tufts not run down the last hurdle he must havo won. Time 3.12, divs. £1 12s and £1 6s. luvermay Welter. —Goldspur 1, Wild West 2, Lapidary 3. Won by two lengths. Time 1.23 2-5, divs. £2 2s and £3 6s.
Provincial Handicap.—Pampero 1, Terrapin 2, Canteen 3. Fivo others started. W 7 on by two lengths. Time 1.45 15, divs. £4 12s and £2 2s.
Novel Handicap.—Off Chanco 1, Lapidary 2, Senior Wrangler 3. W 7 on by half a length. Time 1.24 1-5, divs., £4 16s and 14s.
Wairongoa Handicap. Pallas had a walk over. Hack Handicap.—St. Elmo 1, Yseult 2, Mosca 3. Won by a short head. Time 1.254, div. £0 16s. Farewell Handicap. Lady Lilian 1, Clanburn 2, Red Banner 3. W r ou by a length. Time 1.52 3-5, divs. £2 2s and £1 18s.
Speculation on the Great Northern Steeplechase and Grand National Hurdle Race has kept up well during the week, and the variety of the selections shows that the issue in both races is regarded as most open. The Guard, Cavaliero, WTaiwera, Moifaa, and Rufus are the most popular selections for the Great Northern Steeplechase, while Tresham, Royal Conqueror, Mars, and Tirea are most in favor for the Hurdle Race. The penolllere are sstill quoting 100 to 4 on tho field,
