Sheep-Dog Trial Meeting.
1 The eighth annual meeting of the Poverty Bay Sheep-dog Trial Meeting was brought to a conclusion on Saturday, and attracted a good deal of attention. The following are the prize-winners in the several competitions : Class 1, heading, bring back and yard : E. Steggall’s Monk, 28.]- points, 1; C. Wright’s Jean, 28 points, 2; J. McIntosh’s Dick, 27 points, 3 ; E.Hingston’s Dover, 24 points, 4. Class 2, hunt away : J. Mclntosh’s Dick, 37 points, 1; E. Steggall’s Sharp, 364 points, 2; J. Mclntosh’s Tweed, 36 points, 3; E. Steggall’s Monk, 35 points, 4. Class 3, heading: J. Bussell’s Guy, 28J points, 1; E. Steggall’s Sharp, 28 points, 2 ; C. Wright's Yarra, 274 points, 3 ; F. Cook’s Boy. 27 points, 4. SPECIAL PHIZES. The silver cup presented by Mr F. J. Shelton for team of three dogs, the bonafide property of competitor, each dog to score at least 15 points in any class, was won by Mr B. Merritt. Mr W. Good’s trophy, value one guinea, for dog scoring most points at the meeting, was won by Mr E. Steggall’s Sharp with 95 points. Mr W. Morgan’s trophy, for dog under best command, went to Mr J. Mclntosh’s Dick, and Mr E. Williams’ trophy, for tho best team of three dogs, was secured by Mr B. Merrett. Mr Zachariah’s prize, for dog scoring most points at the meeting, was won by Mr E. Steggall’s Sharp, and Messrs Primrose and Leslie’s prize for dog unplaced at any previons meeting scoring 20 points, was awarded to Mr G. Hinton’s Snip. Messrs E. Johnston and Co.’s special prize for best-looking dog scoring 15 points, went to Mr C. Wright’s Yarra, and Messrs Shierlaw and Co.'s trophy for the noisiest hunt-away dog scoring 15 points, was won by Mr A. Burch’s Joe. The special prize presented by Mr M. Hall, for best hunt-away dog not winning a prize, was won by Mr Thomson’s Leo.
SMOKE CONCERT, On Saturday evening at the Masonic Hotel a social gathering in connection with the meeting was held and was largely attended. Mr D. Cameron presided. Songs and recitations were given by members and friends, and altogether a very enjoyable time was spent. “ Success to the Dog Trial Club,” was proposed byMr C. Hellier Evans, who made an excellent speech, the toast being responded to by Messrs Eussell and Cameron. The toast of “ The Prize-winners,” was ably proposed by Mr Zachariab, and acknowledged in appropriate terms by Messrs Mclntosh, Steggall, Merrett, and Eussell. The toast of “ Our Host,” was proposed by the Chairman, who referred to the keen interest that Mr Harding took in all matters pertaining to the dog trial meeting. Mr Harding suitably responded. A number of other toasts were honored, and the gathering broke up a few minutes before eleven o’clock, with 11 Auld Lane Syne,”
