Mount Pelee on Tuesday ejected a column of volcanic matter" and rained red hot boulders on the ruins of St. Pierre and neighborhood. Sun-lit volcanic clouds were seen at Fort de France till they resembled molten metal. It was an appalling but sublime sight.... Stones and ashes fell on the town. A tidal wave entered the bay, and broke the ships’ moorings. The people (led to the hills, and others later on took refuge on the warships. The sea invaded and partly destroyed Le Carbet. Two hundred and forty people were conveyed from thence and the adjacent villages to Fort de France. Fire and smoke appeared on a peak n the islet of Diamond Rock, southwest of Martinique, and continues. Sharp shocks of earthquakes were felt in Florida on Tuesday. French papers report rumblings of an extinct crater in South Autut. 'HE PANIC AT MARTINIQUE.
By telegraph—Press AssociationCopyright. PARIS, May 23. The population of Martinique are clamoring for removal. M. Declais, French Minister for the Colonies, has enquired from the Act-ing-Governor as to the expediency of partial or entire evacuation. A transport service is being organised.
