LORD HOPETOUN.
ADVICE TO THOSE WHO PAY THE CASH. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Melbourne, May 22. Mr Chamberlain’s despatch dealing with the Governor-General’s allowance has been laid on the table of the Senate. Mr Chamberlain affirms that, taking into consideration the relative magnitude and importance of the duties of the GovernorsGeneral of Canada and Australia, the latter is probably the more arduous, and would entail rnoro expenses. It is of the highest importance that the salaries of colonial Governors be adequate, without having to be supplemented from their private resources. Mr Chamberlain pointed out that Canada allows thirty thousand dollars in addition to the salary.
