RIFLE SHOOTING.

THE GOVERNMENT COMPETITIONS. The competitions for the gold and silver medals, offered by the New Zealand Government for competition by Volunteers who have attained to the distinction of “ marksmen,” took place yesterday at the Wainui range. Colonel Newali, C. 8., who commands the Wellington District of New Zealand forces, was in command, while Sergeant-Major Finn supervised the marking. The scores by the members of the Gisborne Rifles were as follows ; Private Stewart 92 Sergeant Wakelin ... ... 87 - Corporal Taylor 79 ' - sflrseant5 fl rseant Cruikshank ... 74 Private Kemp ..f "• As it is known that 105 points have | been made at Hastings and 109 in Auckland, our local men have no chance of obtaining either of the medals. The weather was very boisterous, and the lioht very dull, hence the low scores made.
