At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr W. A. Barton, S.M.. John Cowan, for a breach of the building byelaws, was fined ,-£1 and costs £1 Bs. Mr E. J. Chrisp represented the corporation. Tenders are invited for a seven years' lease of a five-roomed house and 30 acres oi lanfl'at Makauri. It is a portion of the property of Mrs W. 11. Cooper. All particulars can be obtained from Mr R. N. Jones, with whom tenders must be left.
A Press Association message from Dunedin states that the Waihora arrived at Hobart at 10 on Sunday night. Some alarm was caused by a cablegram from Sydney yesterday morning, stating that the Waihora had not been reported at Hobart.
At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr W. A. Barton, S.M., \V. G. Watson was fined 10s and 8s costs, for driving at night without a light. His Worship said that this dangerous practice was becoming very common, and if it was persisted in he would have to increase the pen alty.
The Auckland section of the Sixth Contingent were welcomed by the Mayor and a large number of friends at the railway station yesterday.

The Theoretical Examination Trinity. College, London, will be held- in the Catholic schoolroom, on Saturday, June 7th, 1902. Entries of names for the Convent School Centre of Practical Examination in connection with Trinity College, London, close on Friday, May 23rd. A meeting of the Sanitary Committee of the Borough Council was held yesterday, when it was decided, with a view of preventing tlie introduction of plague in Gisborne, that a general cleaning-up of the borough was necessary. The Inspector was notified to vigorously enforce the borough bye-laws, and a notice to this effect appears in our advertising columns. An excellent entertainment will be provided at the Theatre Royal to-morrow evening, when the Rev. W. Ready will repeat his lecture, entitled “From London
streets to the pulpit.” Those who heard Mr Ready on Wednesday evening last were greatly impressed with the lecture, and anyone looking for a good evening's amusement should not miss this last opportunity of hearing him.
The Gisborne Co-operative Building Society sold an appropriation for £3OO last evening, £IOO realising £3O, and the remaining £2OO £27 per hundred. Mj Symes presided, and stated that tho sharelist was full, and, as soon as sufficient inducement offered, there would be another issue started. It was proposed to make the limit of the shares five instead of three as under the present rules.
Yesterday morning a S.W. breeze wa s experienced at Auckland, with blue sky ; Napier, S.W. moderate gale, fine weather ; New Plymouth, S.W. gale, overcast; Wellington, N.W. breeze, blue sky ; Greymouth, S.W. fresh breeze, cloudy ; Christchurch, light S.W. wind, blue sky ; Dunedin, S.W. gale, with rain; Invercargill, S.W. moderate gale, overcast. A heavy sea was running at Pouto, Manukau Heads, Cape Egrnont, Wanganui, Greymouth, Hokitika, and Bluff; smooth to rough elsewhere. At tho usual weekly meeting of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union, Mr Miller presiding, an application was received from the recently formed Hockey Association for use of one of the Union grounds. Permission granted on certain conditions. It was decided to play last Saturday’s match West End v. Ivaiti— City (postponed on account of the weather) next Saturday, the 2-lth. Mr A. W. Rees was appointed Referee, and Mr J. Webb for the junior fixture (Huia and West End). The Secretary reported that the schoolboys’ season’s tickets were going off well. The Ground Oommitteo handed in a report re the various works in hand on the Domain, which was considered most satisfactory.
