EDUCATION BOARD.
(Special to Times.)
Napier, last night. At the meeting of the Education Board, held to-day, the following business was transacted :
Gisborne: Captain Tucker’s offer of a
school site was declined with regret, as the conditions mako it impossible for the Board to accept it. Mr J. S. Wauehope is to bo asked whether ho intends to accept tho appointment of assistantmaster in terms of tho advertisement. Mr W. Paltridge’s offer of a school site on tho Whataupoko for £260 was not entertained. Makauri: Granted £5 for a cupboard and conveniences. Motu: The question of appointing a mistress was left in the hands of the Chairman. Ormond : The appointment of a relieving teacher at Ormond was left in the hands of the Chairman. A grant was made for necessary small repairs. Frasertown: Mr J. Kain was appointed master. Wairoa: Mr Miller to report on requirements. ,/Patutahi: Granted £5 for repairs. Waipiro Bay : Tho question of a horsopaddock was left with tho Chairman. An animated discussion took place on the question of district high schools, and the wholo question was referred to the Minister; also a sub committee was appointed to go into the establishment of district high schools, and to ascertain what funds and reserves were available for tho
purpose. Relative to tho question of scholarships and the Gisborno District High School, a committee was appointed to consider the matter. It was recommended that the Secretary bo instructed to pay the scholarships this year as formerly, and that pupils who receivo them bo hold as paying pupils. Furthor, that as £65 is at the disposal of tho Board for salaries to secondary teachers, it be placed with moneys received quarterly under the district high school regulations, and used for tho payment of salaries of secondary toachors.
It was resolved to represent to tho Education Department that the present basis on which the building grant is distributed is singularly unsuited to the present condition of the country, and unfair to Boards like Hawke’s Bay. Canterbury received at the samo rate per head of population as Hawke’s Bay, although it was reported schools there wore being closed for want of population, while throughout Hawke’s Bay, and and the districts along the East Coast, tho population bad enormously increased. The present grant to Hawko’s Bay would not, it was pointed out, nearly meet the reasonable needs of Gisborne and the East Coast. , Juue 14th was fixed as the date of the election of the school committees which had not been elected at the advertised date.
The mid-winter holidays commence on June 20th, and terminate on July 6th.
