EARTHQUAKE SHOCKS.
A sharp shock of earthquake was felt throughout the district at ten minutes to eleven last evening, and a faint shock early this morning. A remarkable feature was that there was a beautiful moonlight, with a cool breeze, until after 10 o’clock, when clouds gathered in a peculiar way so as to attract tho general attention of those who happened to be out. At aquarter to eleven a dead calm set in, and five miuutes later the shock was felt.
A smart shook of earthquake was reported from Napier as occurring at the same time as at Gisborne. The operator on for the Times after midnight cables was Mr Sigley, and while a message for the Times was being transmitted at 10 minutes to 11, the operators simultaneously noted that an earthquake was proceeding, and eased off for a minute.
[By Telegraph—Press Association.] Wanganui, last night. A slight shook of earthquake was experienced here at 10.42 this evening.
