AUSTRALIANS V. SURREY. INNINGS VICTORY FOR THE COLONIALS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, May 14. The match was continued in dull, cold weather, tho attendance being meagre. The pitch was rather difficult, kicking occasionally. Armstrong was awkward tc play, Noblo easier. Baker was dismissed without increasing tho overnight score, Carter taking an easy- chance at the wickets off Noblo. The departing batsman had been an hour at the wickets. One for 28, of which Abel made 23. Hayes filled the vacancy, and Howell went on to bowl, and in his second over displaced Abel s off bail. Ho had been at the wickets ninety-five minutes, and showed good form, considering the nasty wicket. Two for 55, Hayes 12. Lockwood followed, but soon lost his partnor, who was clean bowled by Howell. Three for 66. Hayward was the next man, but failed to score. He placed one of Saunders' into Carter’s hands, tho wicket-keeper making a smart catch. Four for 67. Brockwell partnered, and play became more livoly, 26 runs being added in a quarter of an hour. With the seoro at 93, Noblo got rid of Brockwell by an catch at point. Five for 93, Lockwoc.. Hawson's arrival saw a series of disasters, three wickets falling in rapid succession without any addition to tho score. Lockwood was bowled by Howell with a fine break-back, Crawford was caught by Armstrong in the slips off Howell, and Dawson was caught by Howell in the slips while trying to drive Saunders. Eight for 93. Jephson had only added three before Howell claimed another victim. He clean bowled Stedman for nil. Jephson’s turn oamo next, Darling, in the slips taking a catch off Saunders. Richardson was last man. The innings closed for 96, Saunders taking four wickets for 26 runs, Noblo one for 21, Howell five for 23, Armstrong none for 2. With 200 in arrears, Surrey followed on. The large hopes of materially improving the position was quiokly dispelled. Hayward and Abel opened tho defence. Howell and Saunders being the bowlers. Howell commenced operations by removing Hayward's middle stump with a break-back when he had only two to his credit. One for three. Seyers succeeded to fill the spoil of Howell, Armstrong making an easy catoh in tho slips. Two for fifteen. Abel’s turn came next, Howell catching him off his own ■ bowling. He was at the wickets 70 miu- • utes, and batted excellently. Four for 57. 3 Brockwell partnered Baker, but the latter failed to stop one of Noble’s, who had ' gone in place of Saunders. Five for 57. * Dawson came next. Howell getting ill > some splendid work, shifted Brockwell’s ' leg stump on his attempting to hit out. Six for 63. Crawford ran up a dozen before he was clean bowled by & Howell. Seven for 75. Jephson found 1 Howell unplayable, and succumbed with--6 out scoring. A fine off-break which he 5 did not attempt to play, got his wicket. 1 Eight for 79.
