The rain of fire ceased two hundred yards short of Lc- Carbet. Two thousand are dead at St. Vincent, mostly Caribs. A stream of stones and mud half a mile wide is is issuing from Soufriere. On the tenth there were two earthquakes. There were several shocks at St. Thomas. Mont Pelee is still erupting smoke and fire. All within a radius of Chateau Blair and Georgetown have been killed.

All tho best estates are ruined. Nothing green is visible. Four feet of ashes covers the ground. The rivers are dry. A thousand corpses have been interred, including many whites. The exact numbers of those killed will never be known.

The Governor of Barbados compares the Mount Pelees eruption with boiling sealing wax, destroying everything over an area of ten miles by six. Two million tons of dust fell at Barbados. When disinterred from the cinders the corpses were blacti and shiny, as if plunged in boiling pitch.
